The Environmental Information System acronymed as ENVIS was implemented by the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Govt. of India in 1983 as a plan programme as a comprehensive network in environmental information collection, collation, storage, retrieval and dissemination to varying users, which include decision-makers, researchers, academicians, policy planners, research scientists and other stakeholders.
MoEF&CC has identified Centre for Environmental Studies (CES), Bhubaneswar, as one of the centers to collect and disseminate information on “State of Environment & It’s Related Issues”. The ENVIS node at the CES was declared as ENVIS Centre in 2005.
The objectives of ENVIS:

  • To provide national environmental information service relevant to present needs and capable of development to meet the future needs of users.
  • To build up storage, retrieval and dissemination capabilities, with the ultimate objective of disseminating information speedily to the users.
  • To promote national and international cooperation and liaison for exchange of Environment related information.
  • To promot, support and assist education and personnel training programmes designed to enhance environmental information processing and utilization capabilities.
  • To promote exchange of information among countries and region.
